Fort Canning Photo Album
Established in 1859 as an arms store, barracks and hospital, Fort Canning is now a park overlooking the lower end of Orchard Road on one side and River Valley Road on the other. It contains an interesting mix of Singapore’s history: memorials dating back to the 14th century, including a Muslim keramat (shrine) and Sir Stamford Raffles' personal bungalow. The Battle Box is a World War II bunker converted to a small exhibition site of war relics, replicas and audio-visual documentary. Then there is the Spice Garden, a small replica of the original 19-hectare tract Raffles established in 1822 as the first experimental and botanical garden in Singapore. Finally, Fort Canning is also a popular open-air venue for the arts, including concerts, plays, ballet performances and exhibitions.
